In 2012/2013 Kings Ripton Parish Council applied to Cambridgeshire County Council to be considered for the programme of Minor Highway Improvement scheme. The scheme invited bids from Town & Parish Councils & Community Groups aimed to improve the environment, encourage walking, cycling or use of public transport.
Kinds Ripton Parish Council successfully applied to reduce the speed limit through the village from 30mph to 20mph with the Council providing at least of 10% contribution towards the cost of the proposed project.
Cambridgeshire County Council subsequently carried out speed surveys in the village which indicated that the average speed was 35mph. Cambridgeshire County Council’s speed limit policy states that 20mph speed limits will only be permitted at sites where the mean speed of traffic is 24mph or lower or in combination with self-enforcing speed reduction features necessary to achieve a mean speed no greater than 24mph
Members of Kings Ripton Parish Council met with representative of Cambridgeshire County Council to discuss the results of the survey and explained the requirements needed to reduce the speed of traffic. The Parish Council accepted that they were unable to meet the additional funds for the required traffic calming to implement the 20mph scheme through the village. But have requested that the bid be amended to provide a set of speed cushions with the required street lighting (this would be a maximum of 3 lights) in order to assist in the reduction of speed of traffic.
This proposal is currently subject to safety audit and if the survey is positive, then the likely location for the bumps will come out of the safety audit. This application has received the agreement of Cambridge County Council Highways division and Cambridgeshire County Councillors Victor Lucas. Further details of the proposed plan and budgetary costs will be posted on line when the details have been received.
